Manage your directory privacy settings
This guide shows you how to control who can see you in the member directory — including whether you appear at all, what information each person can see, and whether members can message you through the directory.
Who can do this: Any signed-in member. You can only change your own privacy settings; you cannot change another member’s settings.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Some settings may be locked by your organization’s admin. Locked fields display “Set by your admin” and cannot be changed.
- Changes to your directory listing take effect right away.
Show or hide yourself in the directory
Section titled “Show or hide yourself in the directory”- Sign in to the member portal.
- Select More in the navigation, then select Preferences.
- Scroll to the Directory privacy section (or select Directory privacy directly if your portal uses a tab layout).
- Find the Show me in the directory toggle.
- If the toggle is on, you’re currently visible in the directory.
- If the toggle is off, you’re currently hidden.
- Select the toggle to switch your listing on or off. The change saves immediately and a confirmation appears.
If the toggle is greyed out and says “Your admin has set this — contact them to change,” your admin has locked your directory listing. Select Contact admin to get in touch.
Set per-field privacy
Section titled “Set per-field privacy”When you’re listed in the directory, you can choose who can see each field on your profile.
- In the Directory privacy section, find the Field visibility heading.
- For each field, choose one of three options:
- Public — anyone who views the directory can see this field, including visitors who aren’t signed in (on public directories).
- Members only — only signed-in members can see this field.
- Hidden — this field doesn’t appear on your directory profile at all.
- After changing any fields, select Save field visibility. All your field changes are saved together in one step.
- To undo your changes before saving, select Cancel. Your selections return to what they were before you started.
If a field shows “Set by your admin” with the selector greyed out, your admin has locked that field. You can see the locked value but can’t change it.
If you’re hidden from the directory, the field visibility section collapses. Your field settings are still saved and will apply again when you re-enable your listing.
Turn off directory messages
Section titled “Turn off directory messages”- In the Directory privacy section, scroll to the Allow members to message me through the directory toggle.
- Select the toggle to turn directory messaging on or off. The change saves immediately.
This setting is independent of your email preferences. Turning off directory messages only affects whether members can message you through the directory — it doesn’t change your email notifications from the organization.
Verify
Section titled “Verify”After hiding yourself from the directory, you’ll see a confirmation “You’ve been hidden from the directory.” After saving field changes, you’ll see “Privacy updated.” After changing the messaging toggle, you’ll see “Messaging preference updated.”
If something goes wrong
Section titled “If something goes wrong”- “Could not update — try again” — the change didn’t save. Select Save field visibility again. If the error repeats, refresh the page and try once more.
- “Could not load your privacy settings” — select Try again to reload your settings.
- Your session expired while editing — sign back in. You’ll need to re-enter any unsaved field changes.
